The Watchers’ weekly volcanic activity report for 22 to 28 October lists five volcanoes with new or increased activity and 23 with ongoing activity.

At Chikurachki in Russia’s Kuril Islands, an explosive eruption began on 26 October. Ash rose to about 5.6 km above sea level and drifted roughly 240 km east. The aviation colour code was raised to Orange, then lowered to Yellow on 28 October.

Nevados de Chillán in Chile kept producing ash plumes, reaching about 2.4 km above the crater on 28 October, and residents are told to stay 2 km from the active emission centre. At Piton de la Fournaise on Réunion, a magma intrusion beneath the south rim of Dolomieu Crater was detected on 24 October, the alert went to Orange and was lowered to Yellow on 26 October. Whakaari (White Island) in New Zealand continued minor eruptive activity with gas plumes and a Volcanic Alert Level of 3.

Among those with ongoing activity, the report lists Sakurajima in Japan, Semeru and Merapi in Indonesia, Ambrym and Ambae in Vanuatu, Kilauea in Hawaii and Etna in Italy.

Reporting note: this is a weekly summary of monitoring agency data. Eruptions on this scale happen regularly around the world, and one date in the original report appears inconsistent, so we have left that item out.
