Vandals cut the head off a statue of Jesus outside St Albans Catholic church in Warrington on the night of Halloween, 31 October, and daubed the figure with green and black paint. Anti-Catholic graffiti was also painted on a plaque.
Police are treating the incident as a hate crime. The parish priest, Canon Christopher Cunningham, said the attack was a reminder of the evil in the world.
