Moldova’s Central Electoral Commission has halted plans to verify voters with the EVO digital identity app at polling stations. For the 1 November municipal elections and local referendum, voters had to show physical ID instead.

The decision followed an October cyberattack that exposed personal records linked to about 750,000 state ID numbers. The government also temporarily disconnected 82 public digital services while investigations and security audits continue.

The episode is a concrete example of the risk critics of digital ID schemes raise: a single breach can expose a great deal of personal data at once.
